1918 BORGEL CASED POCKET WATCH, RETAILED BY JW BENSON, LONDON

Watches

A very rare Borgel silver cased pocket watch retailed by JW Benson, London. A high quality Longines 15 jewel caliber 18.79 mechanism. An enamel dial with lume Arabic markers and 'cathedral' hands. They became popular due to their use by officers in the trenches during the great war and were often advertised as 'active service watches' to the public. Longines and IWC were two companies who adopted the screw case design in its early stage. This example bears the name of JW Benson, London, who retailed Longines watches with their own name on. Borgel watches were expensive to purchase when produced and with a lume dial and Longines mechanism, retailed by a high quality jewellers such as Benson, this watch would have been a costly piece when new.
