A fine quality Georgian longcase clock by an important maker, Issac Nickals of Wells (Norfolk). A chinoiserie lacquer case with a pagoda pediment surmounted by 3 original brass finials (central one taken off but comes with the clock!) Front and rear hood columns and side glass panels. A glass panel to the pagoda top. A double plinth skirting. The case decoration depicts Chinese scenes and are nicely detailed. A brass dial with a silvered chapter ring, date, seconds and lunar moon phases to the arch. Blued steel hands. A rarer and fine quality moon phases to the arch with the age of the moon showing by a hand and the inner circular dial showing the moon throughout the month. A fine quality 8-day duration, latched 5 pillar mechanism striking the hours on a bell. The striking mechanism is between the plates and a clever, rarer feature. Original brass cased weights. Circa 1740.
Issac Nickals of Wells in Norfolk is illustrated on the front and back cover of 'Norfolk & Norwich Clocks & Clockmakers' book by Clifford & Yvonne Bird. He was born c1709 and died in 1755. He was also a maker of church clocks and replaced the Wells clock in 1731. One clock is in the Weatherfield Collection (and illustrated in the book by Eric Bruton) and is also illustrated in Loomes 'Grandfather Clocks & their cases' book.Height 7ft 9"/ 237 cms Width (at widest point of hood) 19" / 48 cms Depth 10" / 24 cms.
