A Georgian period Cheshire longcase/Grandfather clock. A well proportioned oak and mahogany crossbanded case with dentil cornice top mouldings and a diamond shaped panel. Hood side columns with gilt woooden capitals. Fluted trunk sides and a raised plinth panel with mahogany crossbanding. A brass dial with corner spandrels and a seconds dials with blued steel hands. A date aperture and a nicely engraved dial centre. The silvered chapter ring is engraved 'N Brown Manchester'. A quality 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell with an internal striking countwheel. Circa 1775.
Nathanial Brown of Manchester is a well respected maker working from 1760-1800 and illustrated in E Davis' book 'Greater Manchester Clocks & Clockmakers'. An example is in the Metropolotan Museum of Art in New York.
